Sunderland loan Giaccherini to Bologna

Sunderland winger Emanuele Giaccherini has been allowed to leave the club to join Serie A outfit Bologna on a season-long loan.
Manager Dick Advocaat has bolstered his attacking options in recent days with the arrival of Ola Toivonen on loan and fan favourite Fabio Borini on a four year deal, leaving Italy international forward Giaccherini on the fringes of the first-team.
Bologna are now set to benefit from the 30-year-old's services as they bid to avoid relegation following their promotion back to the top flight.
Giaccherini has made 32 Premier League appearances for Sunderland since arriving from Juventus in 2013.

Southampton recruit young goalkeeper Lewis

Southampton have signed 17-year-old goalkeeper Harry Lewis from League One outfit Shrewsbury Town.

The England youth international will work with both the Under-18 and Under-21 sides at St Mary's Stadium after signing a three-year professional contract and will hope to develop through the club's renowned academy.

"I think just looking round the place you can see it is a fantastic football club with brilliant facilities and excellent coaching staff," he told the club's official website.

"I think it was a no-brainer really for me to make this move. I’ve been at Shrewsbury since I was eight and it is my hometown club.

"I'm always going to be close to them but when an opportunity like this comes around you don't say no.

"I'm here to get better as a footballer and get as many chances as I can. That's the most important thing for me."

Inter chief confirms agreement for Roma's Ljajic

The Serbian looks set to swap the Stadio Olimpico for San Siro, according to Nerazzurri transfer chief Piero Ausilio
Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has confirmed that Roma attacking midfielder Adem Ljajic is set to join the San Siro club on Serie A's deadline day.
It is being reported in Italy that the Serbia international, 23, will join the Nerazzurri on a season-long loan for €2 million with an option for his new club to purchase for an additional €9m in 2016.
"Yes, you could say that there is a Ljajic agreement," Ausilio remarked to Tuttomercatoweb late on Monday.
Ljajic has spent two seasons at the Stadio Olimpico side but failed to truly make his mark on Rudi Garcia's XI since his €11 million signing on a four-year contract in August 2013.
The ex-Fiorentina star looks set to join midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, winger Ivan Perisic, defenders Jeison Murillo and Miranda, striker Stevan Jovetic and utility man Martin Montoya as Inter signings.
Inter have started their season with back-to-back wins in Serie A, leaving them third behind Chievo and Torino after two matches.

Piazon agrees to Reading loan move

Chelsea attacker Lucas Piazon has agreed a season-long loan deal with second-tier Reading.

The 21-year-old, who has featured just once for the Blues since his move from Sao Paulo in 2011, will join up with former Chelsea player and coach Steve Clarke, now in charge at the Madejeski Stadium.

The Brazilian spent last season on loan at Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt and has picked up further experience of European competition with previous short-term deals with Vitesse in the Netherlands and with La Liga's Malaga.

The youngster made 23 appearances in Germany last year and scored on two occasions.

BREAKING NEWS: Blaszczykowski joins Fiorentina

Borussia Dortmund winger Jakub Blaszczykowski has joined Fiorentina on loan until the end of the season, the German club have announced.
The Poland skipper has made over 200 appearances for BVB since joining from Wisla Krakow in 2007, but his last couple of seasons have been plagued by injuries.
Having fallen down the pecking order under new boss Thomas Tuchel, he will spend the next season in Florence.
"Kuba is not only a great footballer but a wonderful person. For him it is important to get a lot of match practice ahead of Euro 2016," BVB sporting director Michael Zorc explained to the club's official site.

José Mourinho tells Chelsea players medals should motivate them

José Mourinho has branded as unacceptable the form of a core of his title-winning team this season and warned he will make changes to his lineup if improvements are not immediate after Chelsea’s worst start to a domestic campaign in two decades.

The manager, who expressed dismay at suggestions some of his squad may be resting on their laurels from last term in the wake of Saturday’s home defeat to Crystal Palace, will now hope there is late progress in his club’s long-standing pursuit of the Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Any interest in the Tunisia centre-half Aymen Abdennour has been dropped after he swapped Monaco for Valencia, while Zenit St Petersburg will resist attempts to prise away the Argentina defender Ezequiel Garay.
Mourinho voiced frustration more progress had not been made to secure those pinpointed on his list of summer transfer targets, submitted to the board in late April, though his immediate task remains to reinvigorate members of his current squad. Asked whether his team retained the appetite to defend their title, the Portuguese said: “If that is the point, it is very, very sad because, for me, I feel the opposite. When I win, I want to win again. My medal is at home, in a drawer, [because] I feel fantastic motivation for more. If you win it once and the next [year] you are not on fire, not ready at least to fight for more, that is sad.

“City reacted to the fact they had lost the title by buying fantastic players. They are buying more until the end of the market. This is their job and, if they have the economic potential to do that, good. They did well. You see my players on the pitch and you could clearly identify two or three who can do better. It is not a question of loyalty: [my job] is to analyse if they are ready to give an answer and fight against that bad individual form.”

Asked specifically about Eden Hazard, the Footballer of the Year who endured another ineffective afternoon against Palace, he added: “If you are the best player in the Premier League it should be a good responsibility to have a similar season than in the previous season. I don’t want to analyse individual performances. In general terms, it is difficult to have a consistent performance when some of the players are not performing at a good level. When you have six or seven performing and three or four who are not an acceptable level, it is hard for a team to be consistent in the performance.

West Ham closing in on Nikica Jelavic and Michail Antonio after Maïga departs

The Hull striker Nikica Jelavic is understood to be having a medical with West Ham while the London club have also had an improved offer for Michail Antonio accepted by Nottingham Forest.

Injuries to Andy Carroll and Enner Valencia, plus the departure of Modibo Maïga to Al Nassr, have left West Ham short of options and they are believed to have agreed a fee for the 30-year-old Croatia international.

Jelavic, who knows the West Ham manager, Slaven Bilic, from the latter’s time in charge of Croatia, scored eight goals in Hull’s unsuccessful fight against relegation from the Premier League last season and underwent surgery on a long-standing knee problem earlier this year.

West Ham’s second bid for Antonio, thought to be in the region of £7m, comes less than a week after the Premier League club saw their initial approach turned down.
The Hammers had offered around £5m plus Matt Jarvis on a season-long loan deal. Forest had also previously rejected bids from West Brom and Derby for Antonio, who is it understood is due in London for talks on Monday.

Antonio has made a huge impact at the City Ground since joining Forest from Sheffield Wednesday last summer in a £1.5m deal.

Manchester United’s Javier Hernández on verge of move to Bayer Leverkusen

Javier Hernández is set to end his five-year stay at Manchester United after he was spotted at Bayer Leverkusen on the brink of an £8.75m move.

Hernández, an unused substitute in Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to Swansea, spent last season on loan at Real Madrid and has failed to force his way into the plans of Louis van Gaal, who has turned his attentions to Monaco’s Anthony Martial.

After receiving £22m from Tottenham for Son Heung-min, Leverkusen have decided to move for Hernández on a permanent basis with the €12m fee being reported by the German sports magazine Kicker.

Chelsea close in on £2.7m deal for Nantes defender Papy Djilobodji

Chelsea’s search for defensive reinforcements before Tuesday’s transfer deadline has prompted a move for the Nantes centre-half Papy Djilobodji, with the player set to sign a four-year contract for a cut-price £2.7m.
Djilobodji, a Senegal international, had entered the final 12 months of his deal and, having made clear his desire to depart this summer, has been training with the development squad at Nantes.

A bid of around £1.6m from Trabzonspor was rejected last week, with the 27-year-old having also attracted interest from Celta Vigo. Chelsea made known their interest over the weekend.

While Djilobodji has impressed in Ligue 1, the transfer would still represent something of a surprise given the Premier League champions had been aiming considerably higher for much of the summer. Four bids for the Everton defender John Stones, the last totalling around £38m, had been rejected and, once that pursuit had run aground, inquiries had been lodged with Zenit St Petersburg for Ezequiel Garay and with Athletic Bilbao for Aymeric Laporte. Both deals would have been complicated, and expensive, to complete.

Sunderland agree £7m deal for Liverpool striker Fabio Borini

Sunderland hope to push through a permanent deal for the striker Fabio Borini after agreeing a £7m deal with Liverpool.

The 24-year-old Italian was expected to head for Wearside to undergo a medical with a four-year contract on the table. A successful completion would end the lengthy pursuit of a player who had a key role in Sunderland’s run to the 2014 Capital One Cup final, in which he scored the opening goal, and their remarkable escape from Premier League relegation at the end of the same season.

The former head coach Gus Poyet made Borini his No1 target last summer but was unable to persuade him to leave as he sought to establish himself at Anfield.

Borini has been unable to force his way into Brendan Rodgers’ plans. He made only 18 appearances last season, is yet to figure this campaign and has been linked with several clubs this summer, some of them in Italy.
Speculation has mounted that Watford could tempt Borini to Vicarage Road but Sunderland, who collected their second league point of a testing start to the season in a 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday, hope to beat them to the punch with a deal understood to be worth around £60,000 a week to the player.

Borini’s capture would further Dick Advocaat, who has been urging the club’s owner, Ellis Short, and the sporting director, Lee Congerton, to deliver the five or six “quality” signings he believes are vital if the club are to avoid yet another scrap for top-flight survival.

Liverpool agree Borini sale to Sunderland

Sunderland have agreed a deal worth £7 million to sign out-of-favour Liverpool striker Fabio Borini.

Borini is due to travel to Wearside on Monday to undergo a medical, with the Black Cats increasingly confident they have seen off competition from Inter and Watford for his signature.

The 24-year-old spent the 2013-14 season on loan at the Stadium of Light and became a popular figure, scoring seven goals in 32 Premier League appearances to help Sunderland preserve their Premier League status.

Liverpool then accepted a formal bid from the Wearsiders to sign Borini in the summer of 2014, only for the Italian to turn down a permanent switch as he pledged to fight for a first-team place at Anfield.

Fletcher hails Evans capture from Manchester United

West Brom captain Darren Fletcher has expressed his delight following Jonny Evans' arrival at The Hawthorns from Manchester United.

Evans, 27, completed a move to West Brom on Saturday after Tony Pulis' side had picked up their first Premier League victory of the season with a 1-0 win at nine-man Stoke City.

The Northern Ireland defender is set to join a host of former United players at West Brom, with Fletcher, Ben Foster and James Chester already part of Pulis' squad.

And having played alongside the centre-half for many years, Fletcher believes West Brom have pulled off a notable coup.

Lovren eager to bounce back after nightmare Liverpool showing

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has vowed to bounce back and prove his critics wrong following his error-riddled performance against West Ham.

Lovren struggled to contain the visitors' attack during Saturday's shock 3-0 home defeat, having been at fault for the West Ham's second goal late in the first half after he was dispossessed by Manuel Lanzini.

The Croatia international has been handed added focus after arriving with a hefty £20 million price tag last season but - Saturday aside - has made a bright start this term and is determined to make amends.

"The game is finished and I have forgotten about it already. What can I do?" he told reporters.

"The first minute after the second goal I wanted to go under the table, but in these moments you need to keep your head up. I tried everything but it was a bad decision. Mistakes happen.

Man Utd new-boy Martial is the next Henry

Barely 24 hours left in the summer transfer window, an astronomical fee, a relative unknown on English shores - small wonder Manchester United's proposed signing of Anthony Martial has raised more than a few eyebrows.

Yes the fee is reported to be around the €50m mark - at least. Yes the Parisian forward has played fewer than 50 top-flight matches in France and has only 10 senior league goals to his credit.

But Martial, at 19 years of age, is considered France's next great superstar. United's handling of the deal might be described as desperate, late, even clumsy, but they are buying themselves a player of outstanding potential.

N'Zogbia could leave Aston Villa, admits Sherwood

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood will consider offers for Charles N'Zogbia before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday after admitting he cannot guarantee the winger first-team football.

N'Zogbia was part of Sherwood's Villa Park revolution in the second half of last season as the club preserved their Premier League status and reached the FA Cup final, but he has yet to feature this term.

While Sherwood is in no hurry to see the former Wigan Athletic and Newcastle United wideman leave, he admits N'Zogbia is unlikely to see regular football at Villa following a host of close-season arrivals.

"Charles is a good lad," the manager told The Birmingham Mail. "I have never had a problem with him.

"He is training with the group and he is applying himself very well. When I think it is time for him to get a place in the side he will.

"I was looking for experience from him last season and he certainly had that, he is still there and if I need him, I know I can lean on him.

Low: Germany less reliant on Schweinsteiger now

Germany boss Joachim Low has suggested he will use captain Bastian Schweinsteiger sparingly over the coming years amid concerns over the midfielder's displays for new club Manchester United.

The 31-year-old completed 90 minutes for the first time this season as the Red Devils fell to a 2-1 defeat against Swansea City, with some critics highlighting his lack of mobility and fitness.

Low, though, remains convinced of Schweinsteiger's importance to Die Mannschaft, but ackowledges that he must pick and choose when he fields his skipper to ensure he is always operating at 100 per cent.

"Maybe I no longer need Bastian in every match now," Low told Suddeutsche Zeitung.

"I need him when it is important for us. Then I know that he performs and assumes responsibility and his will to win is like no other."

Germany are in the midst of Euro 2016 qualifying and take on Poland on Friday before facing Scotland three days later, but Low says he is just as focused on plotting how he can defend his nation's World Cup title.

"The European Championships in France is for us a great goal but our thoughts go already beyond in all plans," he continued. "We have the 2018 World Cup in mind - Mission: Title Defence."

On the subject of Germany's upcoming games, he added: "The decisive factor for me is that we can be on our own as leaders.

"The goal is to win both games. I know many players of my team for many years and I know that, in games like against Poland, they are motivated to the tips of their hair."

Poland lead Group D with 14 points heading into the match, with Germany (13) in second and Scotland (11) in third.

Liverpool agree Borini sale to Sunderland

Sunderland have agreed a deal worth £7 million to sign out-of-favour Liverpool striker Fabio Borini, Goal understands.

But faced with the summer arrivals of Christian Benteke, Divock Origi and Danny Ings, Borini has accepted he has no long-term future at Liverpool and is ready to move elsewhere.

Real Madrid? I'm staying at Betis - Ceballos

The midfielder is keen to continue his development with his current club and dismissed talk of a move to the Bernabeu as nothing more than "rumours"
Real Betis midfielder Dani Ceballos says he wants to stay at the Estadio Benito Villamarin despite reported interest from Real Madrid.
The 19-year-old was part of Spain's European Under-19 Championship winning side this summer and also played a key role as Betis won promotion to La Liga last term.
Betis boss Pepe Mel has previously played down suggestions Ceballos could leave for the Bernabeu - despite the youngster having only one season left on his contract - and Ceballos has now pledged his immediate future to the club.
"They are only rumours, what I want is to stay at Betis," Ceballos told AS.
"I want to continue at Betis and enjoy these fans for many years. They trust me because I have never failed them.
"I have always given everything for this shirt and I only think about returning all of the affection that I have received from the Beticos."

De Bruyne arrival caps statement summer from Manchester City

Since signing Sergio Aguero in 2011, Manchester City have repeatedly failed to bring in any attacking talent worthy of either playing alongside or standing in for the mercurial Argentine.

Alvaro Negredo, Stevan Jovetic, Jesus Navas and latterly Wilfried Bony are players signed for (relatively) significant sums who have struggled to make a positive impact at the Etihad Stadium, whether Aguero has been on the pitch or the sidelines.

Negredo's early season goals were important in 2013-14, Jesus Navas currently brings balance to Manuel Pellegrini's new system and Bony may yet get his chance, but for a club laying down roots in Manchester, these are not players who will leave a legacy.

Having failed to defend their Premier League title, City are starting from scratch again. This summer, though, they have sent a message not just to the English game, but to Europe as well.

Zenit demand €100m for Witsel

Zenit maintain that Axel Witsel is not for sale unless a club meet his €100 million (£72.8m) release clause.

The 26-year-old has been linked with a move to Tottenham, while Goal understands that the midfielder was on Chelsea’s shortlist earlier this summer.

AC Milan have also signalled their interest in the Belgium international but admit a deal would be difficult to finance, while the player himself claimed in June that he had been in talks over a switch to Juventus.

"The Belgian is still a Zenit player, the amount for his release clause is €100 million,” said a statement from TASS, Zenit’s press service.

The Russian transfer window closes on August 31.

Manchester United won't panic buy now

Louis van Gaal insists that Manchester United will not panic buy in the final two days of the transfer window despite their 2-1 defeat to Swansea City on Sunday.

United opened the scoring at the Liberty Stadium, with Juan Mata firing home following a Luke Shaw cross, though Garry Monk's side hit back in a five-minute period, with Andre Ayew levelling the scores before Bafetimbi Gomis won the game for the home side.

United have been heavily linked with a number of marquee players, including Thomas Muller and Neymar, in recent weeks, with the transfer deadline looming large.

Van Gaal, though, says that United will not change their transfer strategy after the defeat, and insists that his side dominated the game at the Liberty Stadium.

Juventus paying for bad summer business

The midfielder thinks a failure to replace key figures within the squad has damaged the champions, who have lost both their opening Serie A games
Daniele De Rossi believes Juventus may struggle to cope this season as he does not think they have adequately replaced Carlos Tevez, Andrea Pirlo or Arturo Vidal.

Goals from midfielder Miralem Pjanic and summer signing Edin Dzeko handed Roma a vital 2-1 win over the champions on Sunday, despite Paulo Dybala's late consolation.

The defeat underlines a disastrous start to the season for last term's double-winners, with Udinese having won 1-0 in Turin on the opening day, and De Rossi feels the loss of some key figures in the dressing room is taking its toll.

"Juve created a cycle based on certain players," he said after the match. "Some can replace them, some can't. You have to spend a lot to replace players like Vidal or Tevez. And nobody can replace someone like Pirlo.

Van Gaal in the dark over De Gea future

The Red Devils goalkeeper has yet to feature for the club this season and has been heavily linked with a move away, but the Dutchman insists he does not know if he will be sold
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal concedes he does not know whether goalkeeper David de Gea will leave the club before the end of the transfer window.

De Gea has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid for months and, with the Spanish window set to close on Monday, time is running out to complete a deal.

The Spain international has not featured for United this season, with new signing Sergio Romero starting all of United's games thus far in 2015-16.

Inter sign Perisic

The Croatia international has ended a long-running transfer saga by swapping Bundesliga football with Wolfsburg for life at San Siro
Inter have signed forward Ivan Perisic from Wolfsburg for an undisclosed fee, the Bundesliga club have confirmed.

Roberto Mancini has long been chasing the Croatia international, especially since the sale of Xherdan Shaqiri, but the move appeared to have reached an impasse during the past week.

However, Wolfsburg have since announced that Perisic has sealed a deal to join the Nerazzurri after a breakthrough in negotiations in the last few hours.

"The situation has changed in the last few hours to the extent that we were able to reach a good solution with everyone involved," sporting director Klaus Allofs said to the club's official website.

Shelvey and Vardy earn England call-ups

Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy have been rewarded for good early season form with call-ups to the England squad to face San Marino and Switzerland.

Former Liverpool star Shelvey won his only Three Lions cap against San Marino in 2012 but has been recalled by manager Roy Hodgson following a string of impressive performances for the Welsh side, who defeated Manchester United on Sunday.

Vardy has scored two goals in four games thus far this season, and was previously selected in the squad for the friendly clash with the Republic of Ireland.

The Three Lions, who will be led by captain Wayne Rooney, can qualify for Euro 2016 with victories in both clashes.

Fernando Llorente joins Sevilla after two years at Italian champions Juventus

Fernando Llorente has joined Sevilla after two years of being in and out of the side at Juventus.
The 30-year-old, who became one of the most feared strikers in Europe during his eight
years at Athletic Bilbao, has returned to his home country to sign a three-year contract with the Europa League winners containing a buyout clause of €20m.
The Spain international scored 11 goals in 30 league starts for Juve last season to help the Turin giants win the domestic double of Serie A andCoppa Italia as well as finish runners-up to Barcelona in the Champions League, a game for which he was on the bench for 85 minutes.

Wayne Rooney may be burning out but deserves more acclaim for records

In the next week, it is not a wild leap of logic to imagine Wayne Rooney will move alongside Sir Bobby Charlton as England’s highest scorer, or maybe even make the honour exclusively his own. Rooney needs one to pull level with Charlton and two to go ahead with a half-century of goals, and San Marino are obliging opponents for a man with a record to chase. Charlton has already been interviewed for the Football Association’s eulogies. His tribute is ready to go and the button will be pressed as soon as, presumably, Rooney helps himself against a team featuring the manager of a fitness centre, an olive oil maker and a left‑sided midfielder who earns his living selling lampshades.
After that, Rooney has a couple of other personal targets that are within reach. That was some calling card he left in Bruges in midweek to move to 233 goals for Manchester United. Denis Law’s total of 237 will be next and if Rooney is to have the kind of season that Louis van Gaal envisages, and desperately needs, it could conceivably end with the striker overtaking Charlton’s 249-goal mark. Add that to his haul of achievement – five Premier League titles, the Champions League, two League Cups and enough individual awards to fill a fleet of pantechnicons – and whatever you may think about his declining powers, or however much he intermittently disappoints us, the day will surely come when the majority of people have to accept that this constitutes authentic greatness.
Not everyone, plainly. Rooney polarises opinion like few others and already it is easy to imagine the disdain that will accompany the fact the record is likely to come at a stadium where the last European Championship qualifier attracted a crowd of 759 and there are several rows of trees, rather than stands, behind both goals, with nothing to stop people from standing among the forestry for a free view.
San Marino’s leap from bottom place, 207th, in Fifa’s world rankings to 192nd on the back of a 0-0 draw against Estonia last November, is the equivalent of a golden age for a team whose real place within the sport was probably best described by Ian Archer’s commentary when Scotland were playing there in 1993. “We’ve been playing an hour,” Archer told BBC Radio Scotland’s listeners, “and it’s just occurred to me we’re drawing 0-0 with a mountain-top.” The football history of San Marino reads: one win, four draws, 125 defeats, 17 goals scored and 530 conceded. Rooney has scored more times against this Saturday’s opponents, four, than against any other nation and, whatever the strength of Charlton’s paean, there will inevitably be those who feel the achievement is diminished when the player is topping up his figures against a team with the grand total of three points out of a possible 348 in qualifying competitions.
Jimmy Greaves made that point last October when he said: “The quality of opposition England are up against today is nothing like it used to be.” In total, 18 of Rooney’s goals – more than a third of his tally – have come against seven of the teams who are generally found by scrolling towards the last few pages of Fifa’s rankings. There were three against Kazakhstan and two against each of Andorra, Estonia, Iceland and Belarus. Another came against Liechtenstein, the only team to play San Marino and lose, and he also has one against Macedonia and Lithuania. If we were to judge Rooney’s England career as a whole there was certainly something revealing about his response recently when he was asked to nominate his favourite three goals.
Rooney’s first choice was the one he scored against Macedonia in September 2003 to become England’s youngest ever scorer, at the age of 17 years and 317 days. The other two were from Euro 2004, against Switzerland and Croatia, back in the days when Rooney’s precocious ability to surge past opponents, slaloming through defences with those raw, thrilling qualities, caused the kind of apprehension among opposition defences that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi now inspire.
In other words, none of Rooney’s selections have been from the last 11 years and all go back to his first 18 months in the England setup, in the days when he seemed to hold the keys to the football universe and Sven‑Goran Eriksson would try to play down the hype while simultaneously predicting this would be England’s Pelé. It was the power of his running, the way he would immediately drive forwards, no matter who was in his way, and the manner in which he backed himself every time. More fool us, perhaps, but I can distinctly remember at the time that those of us in Eriksson’s company did not think his prediction to be so outlandish as it maybe sounds now. Rooney was wonderful.

Louis van Gaal insists chats with Wayne Rooney often help change his mind

Louis van Gaal has insisted he is no dictator by revealing that Wayne Rooney can make him change his mind.
The Manchester United captain is involved in wide-ranging discussions about all aspects of the club and Van Gaal said their bond is much closer than a normal player-manager relationship, explaining he is open to persuasion by the striker.
Van Gaal is delighted with the way Rooney, who he appointed captain last year, has embraced his leadership role and feels the United squad benefit from their understanding.
“He is the most social guy and also very responsible,” he said. “I think he trusts me, so that is very important and I trust him, so when he comes to me and has remarks I always pay attention to them. He also has the confidence to say things that are not always normal for players to say, so that is also good for the atmosphere in the dressing room.
He fulfils my expectations unbelievably well. I am very happy and proud of him. As a player, he is the example for everybody because his mentality is from a very high level.”
Van Gaal said their conversations cover everything from his choice of players to their food, explaining: “It is about things like the selection and the kitchen and the members of staff. Everything you can mention, he is involved.”
The manager said his willingness to listen to confidants such as Rooney and vice-captain Michael Carrick proves he is not an autocrat.
I am amazed you say I am single-minded,” he said. “I have a philosophy. You have to come with good arguments to change my philosophy but when you have a better argument than me I change. I am an open guy. I speak about everything, but also with all my other players.”

Fulham reject £10m Ross McCormack offer from Sheffield Wednesday

Fulham have rejected a £10m bid from Sheffield Wednesday for the striker Ross McCormack, it is understood.
Eyebrows were raised when the west London club paid in the region of £11m to sign the Scotland forward from Leeds United last summer following their relegation from the Premier League.
However, McCormack has impressed in west London, leading to reported interest from clubs such as Norwich and Middlesbrough.
The Championship side acted to secure the 29-year-old’s future a fortnight ago as he signed a one-year contract extension until the summer of 2019.
That has not stopped the admiring glances, though, and it is understood Sheffield Wednesday have had a £10m offer turned down.

Kevin De Bruyne close to £51m transfer after medical at Manchester City

Manchester City expect to announce Kevin De Bruyne as their fifth major signing of the summer on Sunday. Wolfsburg’s Belgium attacker is understood to have arrived in Manchester at around 10am on Saturday to undertake his medical, which was completed in the afternoon; the 24-year-old was photographed leaving the centre where the examination had been undertaken.
City insist the move will cost €70m (£50.85m), despite reports in Germany claiming the fee is £58m, but when De Bruyne is signed City’s spend in the current window will be close to £150m.
Raheem Sterling (£49m), Fabian Delph (£8m), Nicolas Otamendi (£32m) and Patrick Roberts (£11m) have all previously arrived to strengthen City’s frontline resources, along with the 18-year-old Enes Unal, who cost £2m.

Pulis hails West Brom match-winner Rondon

Tony Pulis expressed delight at Salomon Rondon's performance after his first Premier League goal led West Brom to 1-0 away win over nine-man Stoke City on Saturday.
The former Potters boss was warmly received by the Stoke fans on his first return to the club and was provided a straightforward victory as first-half red cards for Ibrahim Afellay and Charlie Adam allowed West Brom to take command.
Rondon immediately capitalised on the numerical advantage with a match-winning header from substitute Rickie Lambert's far-post cross in first-half injury time, and Pulis thinks there will be more to come from the club's record signing.
"First half when the players are sent off I thought we did okay and Salomon scored a great goal," the Welsh boss said.
"When it was 11 against 11, they looked the better side, they looked more threatening, although we probably had the best chance with James Morrison's [shot], from which [Stoke goalkeeper Jack] Butland has made an unbelievable save.

James Rodriguez's quality impossible to deny - Benitez

Rafa Benitez has lauded James Rodriguez's talent following the Real Madrid attacker's audacious strikes as they defeated Real Betis 5-0 on Saturday.

James, 24, was the star of the show for the Blancos, scoring Madrid's second of the night with an unorthodox free kick from an acute angle and adding the side's fourth with an acrobatic bicycle kick.

Benitez discussed James' quality, Cristiano Ronaldo not scoring for consecutive gameweeks and the quality of goals scored by last season's La Liga runners up - with Gareth Bale bagging an impressive double and Karim Benzema finishing off a fine team move with his head.

"James has been catching up with the rest of the team's fitness, his quality is undeniable," he told reporters. "Everybody knows the kid can play. There's no debate about it.

I hope Chelsea don't panic-buy after Crystal Palace defeat

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is keen to avoid the temptation to panic-buy in the wake of his side's shock 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Following what was only Mourinho's second league defeat at Stamford Bridge, the Blues now trail rivals Manchester City by eight points after just four games of the Premier League season.

The former Real Madrid coach was critical of three unnamed players following the result but Mourinho says that he is reluctant to return to the transfer market and make rash decisions.

"I hope this does not prompt us to the transfer market. I don't like that," he told the press.

Barcelona can relax over Manchester United talk

Neymar says that Barcelona supporters can relax over talk of a world-record transfer to Manchester United.

The 23-year-old returned from illness to feature in Barca's 1-0 victory against Malaga on Saturday and, after helping his side to their second win of the season at Camp Nou, Neymar made it clear to worried fans that they have nothing about which to be worried.

"The people from Barca can be calm," he told TV3.

"When I hear things like this, I don't think anything. I just heard it and I am calm. I am very happy at Barca and with my colleagues."

Balotelli has a lot of work to do

The enigmatic striker is happy to be a Rossoneri player again, but one of his new team-mates has warned there's a long road ahead
Carlos Bacca believes new AC Milan arrival Mario Balotelli "has a lot of work to do" to be up to speed with his fellow forwards.
Colombia international Bacca scored his first goal for the club during Milan's 2-1 victory over Empoli on Saturday following his €30 million switch from Sevilla and will be hoping to find his stride quickly.
But he already has plenty of competition for a starting place at San Siro, with Balotelli joining Bacca and Luiz Adriano as the third new attacking recruit when he returned on loan from Anfield on Thursday.

Former Liverpool player Ryan Babel makes sexist remark to Twitter user

The former Liverpool attacker Ryan Babel could find himself in hot water following a sexist remark to a Twitter user, subsequently refusing to “argue with a girl about football” and posting what he claims to be his personal phone number.
Babel, now playing with Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates, told the user to “grow some tits instead of speaking about football” after she questioned why he disliked the Real Madrid manager, Rafael Benítez.
The 28-year-old former Holland international followed up the comment with a succession of tweets attempting to defend himself. “At least let your brother or your boyfriend make the comment then we can argue,” he wrote, adding: “Look i’m not this guy anymore who should be careful what i say, regardless if its childish or not.. I’m coming for you if i feel like it.”

Everton’s Roberto Martínez criticises Chelsea over John Stones pursuit

Roberto Martínez has said Everton’s refusal to sell John Stones to Chelseademonstrated the richest clubs cannot simply “click your fingers and get anything you want” and claimed the late transfer deadline could threaten the security of players who want to move.
Everton insist they have drawn a line under the protracted transfer saga after their chairman, Bill Kenwright, issued a statement on Thursday clarifying that Stones is not for sale and “will remain a highly valued member of our first-team squad.” Kenwright’s comment followed the rejection of three Chelsea bids of £20m, £26m and £30m for the England international, with Martínez denying the Premier League champions had submitted a fourth offer for the 21-year-old defender.
The Everton manager admits Stones has been “mixed up” by Chelsea’s pursuit and that his transfer request – rejected in a meeting between Martínez and the player before Kenwright’s statement – stemmed from receiving “the wrong advice”. He said: “It can be for different reasons, different agendas but I’m not going to go into that.”
But Martínez also believes Everton’s stance on a player with four years remaining on his contract served notice that not all Premier League clubs bend to the will of wealthier rivals. “As a club we have the player and we can say we are keeping him. We know the pressure that will bring and that is why the chairman deserves incredible credit,” said Martínez, who signed the young Uruguay striker Leandro Rodríguez on Friday and hopes to add another attacking player plus the River Plate defender Ramiro Funes Mori before Tuesday’s deadline.
“Any chairman would look at any financial deal as an opportunity to do things but our chairman has done what any Evertonian would do and made the right decision for the football club, not for the financial aspect. Any chairman would put his manager into a big problem if he sold one of the club’s biggest assets at this stage of the window, and that happens. But our chairman has been very clear and very strong.
“In any transfer deal a player can make a decision on whether to accept a deal or stay when two clubs agree. In this situation the two clubs never agreed. It is no good thinking that because you have a Champions League budget you’re going to click your fingers and get anything you want because clearly we don’t work like that.”

Villarreal sign ex-Manchester City midfielder Denis Suárez from Barcelona

Villarreal have reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign midfielder Denis Suárez on a four-year deal, with Barça retaining the option to buy the 21-year-old back, the La Liga clubs said on Saturday.
Suárez, who came through Celta Vigo’s academy before spending two years at Manchester City, had been on loan at Sevilla as part of the agreement that brought Croatia midfielder Ivan Rakitic to Barça.
“Suárez was originally due to stay in Andalusia for two years, through to the summer of 2016, but is now headed for [Villarreal], with Barca maintaining the option to repurchase the player at the end of the season,” Barça said on their website.
“The Catalan club also has a second option to repurchase him at the end of the 2016-17 season and a right to first refusal should it not exercise (the second purchase option),” they added.
Suárez was given the chance to show off his attacking flair at Sevilla and became a firm favourite with the home fans.
His dribbling and passing skills made him key part of the side as they swept to a second consecutive Europa League title and qualified for the Champions League.
A jewel in Celta’s youth ranks, he was chased by a number of top European clubs before he joined City in 2011 aged 17.

Celtic sign Tyler Blackett on loan from Manchester United for season

Celtic have announced the signing of Tyler Blackett on a season long loan fromManchester United.
The 21-year-old defender has previously had loan spells at Blackpool and Birmingham and could be a replacement for Virgil van Dijk, linked heavily with a move to Southampton.
The announcement was made on the Parkhead club’s website during their Premiership game with St Johnstone.
The England Under-21 cap was introduced to the home support at the interval to a rousing cheer and was photographed in traditional style, holding a Celtic scarf aloft.
Blackett played 12 times for Manchester United last season, 11 of those appearances coming in the Premier League. He scored an own goal against Arsenal in his most recent outing, on 17 May.

Arsène Wenger believes softening of financial fair play has killed it

As the Premier League’s richest clubs contemplate their last lavish moves before the closure of the transfer window, with gargantuan fees for Kevin De Bruyne and Paul Pogba dominating the headlines, Arsène Wenger has lamented the failure of the FFP experiment. Financial fair play was introduced in 2009 by Uefa as an attempt to curb excessive spending and to encourage clubs to pay out relative to what they earn, but Wenger suggests the regulations are more or less meaningless.
“It has gone,” he said. “I have seen the signs coming from Uefa for a while. I thought it would happen but now it is not possible. What’s happened is the clubs threatened to go to civil court – not only through sport. That brought a lot of insecurity in the decision-making of Uefa so they started to soften the rules a little bit.”
Although the most high-profile cases punished Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, who were fined, with squad size restrictions and spending limits also imposed in February 2014, the number of legal challenges by clubs in effect saw off the FFP concept. Uefa has backtracked to the point that it is no longer viable.
For a number of years, Arsenal’s business plan was based on their hopes that FFP would level the financial playing field. That is no longer a realistic aspiration. Where does that leaveArsenal? “Exactly the same,” Wenger said. “We continue to run our business with the resources we create. They [other clubs] can put a hundred or two hundred on top. It is always like that. Maybe it will change one day.”
The only way that will change is if Arsenal’s ownership model changes. Stan Kroenke, the billionaire majority shareholder, has never shown any desire to fund the club personally and he is a believer in a self-sustaining business model.
That said, Wenger stressed that the problems that have crushed FFP are not the reason for Arsenal’s relative inactivity in this transfer window, with Petr Cech the only major arrival. There is a healthy pot of money – albeit not as deep as, say, Manchester City’s. “I’ve said to you all the time it is not a shortage of money,” Wenger said. “At the moment it is a handicap to us because we have the resources, just shortage of players.”
A year ago Arsenal were busier in the summer window, spending in excess of £75m to recruit Alexis Sánchez, David Ospina, Mathieu Debuchy, Danny Welbeck and Calum Chambers. Sánchez has been the standout success story. Ospina made some solid performances last season but has been superseded by Cech. Welbeck and Debuchy were unlucky with injuries. The jury remains out on Chambers, who arrived as a young prospect and showed strong potential initially. But last Monday he endured a very difficult and nervy game against Liverpool.

Louis van Gaal not sure if Sergio Romero up to Premier League demands

Louis van Gaal has not seen enough yet to know if Sergio Romero is up to the physical challenge of the Premier League, though the manager is pleased with how the goalkeeper has contributed to Manchester United’s start to the season.
Romero was signed as a free agent in July, with Van Gaal having managed the Argentinian at AZ Alkmaar.
David de Gea has been dropped while he is a target for Real Madrid and, while the Spaniard’s future remains unclear, Romero is the No1 and has kept four clean sheets in United’s five games, with the defence conceding only one goal.
Van Gaal said about his goalkeeper: “Until now we don’t allow a lot of shots. I think only maybe the save against Brugge at 1-0 was very important. He did also a save at Tottenham. He could not show what he can do but that’s only a compliment for the team.”
Romero’s fine displays came despite joining United’s summer tour late. Yet the manner in which the 27-year-old has slotted in was expected by Van Gaal. “I’m not surprised we are doing well with him because the defence starts with the striker and we have proved also last season that we have a good defence.”
In Wednesday’s 4-0 win at Club Brugge in the Champions League play-off second leg Javier Hernández missed a late penalty and Van Gaal was annoyed. He said the Mexican should be able to handle the demands of playing for the club. “Every player who plays for Manchester United has to cope with that pressure.”

Manchester United agree to sell Jonny Evans to West Brom for £6m

Manchester United have agreed to sell their central defender Jonny Evans to West Bromwich Albion for £6m, rising to £8m with add-ons.
The Northern Irishman’s sale will end a seven-year spell in the United first team. Evans made his debut in 2007 under Sir Alex Ferguson and won three Premier League titles, the League Cup and Fifa World Club Cup at the club. But the 27-year-old fell out of favour under Louis van Gaal towards the end of last season.
He received a six-match ban for spitting at Newcastle United’s Papiss Cissé during the 1-0 victory on 4 March and was described as “simply disgusting” for doing so by a Football Association regulatory commission. Following the ban Evans played only once more for United, as a 40th-minute replacement in the 2-1 win at Crystal Palace on 9 May.
Tony Pulis, the West Brom manager, confirmed his intent to buy Evans on Friday. “Jonny would be a great signing for the football club but it’s down to the money men and his side. It takes three parties, the player and the clubs. I’d love to sign Jonny Evans,” he said.

Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers praises Dejan Lovren for bouncing back

Brendan Rodgers has said Dejan Lovren needed reassuring he would succeed at Liverpool after losing confidence during a difficult debut season at Anfield. The Croatia international has made an encouraging start to this campaign in a Liverpool defence that has yet to concede a Premier League goal. A fourth consecutive clean sheet at home to West Ham United on Saturday would equal the club’s record from the start of a league campaign, achieved a decade ago.
Lovren struggled for form following his £20m arrival from Southampton last summer and to secure a regular place alongside Martin Skrtel with competition from Mamadou Sakho. However, the 26-year-old has responded well to being told he would be first choice in pre-season and Rodgers admits psychology, plus the team’s defensive structure, is behind Lovren’s improvement.
The Liverpool manager said: “Like a lot of players it was always difficult that first year coming in. There was a lack of stability in the group and it was a case of reassuring him that he was still a top-quality player.
“What has really helped him is how quickly the full-backs close the game down when we lose the ball. In those situations [Nathaniel] Clyne and [Joe] Gomez really help the centre-backs. But for Dejan, he’s much more patient in his game now, he’s got the stability of playing. He’s in the team and he’s in because he had a good pre-season so he’s in good condition. He’s focused but he’s also a bit more relaxed in his position.”
Lazar Markovic will become the fourth of nine players who joined Liverpool last summer to leave during this transfer window when he completes a season-long loan to Fenerbahce. But Rodgers says there was never a question of Lovren increasing that damning statistic.
“I spoke to him on that last season and told him it would be a great learning year for him,” he said. “Of course your confidence can be affected but he’s continued to work very hard and he listens and learns. He knows he’s still got to improve elements of his game but you’re seeing that confidence and that stature he has and over the course of the season you will see a different player.”
Rodgers said Liverpool will not be active on transfer deadline day having signed seven players this summer, although the club still wishes to offload Fabio Borini and José Enrique. Liverpool have resisted approaches for Sakho since the £19m defender lost his place to Lovren and Didier Deschamps, the France coach, has said he dropped the centre-half from his squad to face Serbia and Portugal next month due to his predicament at Anfield.

Kevin De Bruyne’s £54m move to Manchester City close to completion

Kevin De Bruyne’s protracted move to Manchester City is finally nearing completion after Wolfsburg’s sporting director confirmed he will be joining Manuel Pellegrini’s squad.
After weeks of negotiations City made the significant breakthrough on Wednesday night when they agreed a deal worth an initial €74m (£54m) with Wolfsburg, with bonuses potentially taking that figure beyond the €80m (£58.5m) mark.
The only sticking point remaining was to work out how the payment would be structured and to complete a medical but the German club’s sporting director, Klaus Allofs, revealed before Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga match against Schalke on Friday night that the deal has now been confirmed.
“We will complete everything either tonight or tomorrow. De Bruyne is off to Manchester City,” he told reporters.
A private jet has been standing by since Wednesday to take De Bruyne and his agent, Patrick De Koster, to Manchester to complete his medical, with City anticipating he will be officially announced as their record signing at some point on Saturday. The Belgium midfielder was pictured in the stands alongside De Koster as he watched the match against Schalke and is expected to sign a contract worth a staggering £14m a season in wages.
